Reinstalled WolfQuest, Synced with Server- Not My Wolf?

Post by Bushmeat » Thu Sep 13, 2018 1:11 pm

I wiped and reinstalled my entire laptop OS recently for unrelated issues. Upon installing and running Wolfquest, it asked to sync files (unsurprising) and I let it do so. Then I loaded up what I thought was the most recent singleplayer save for my main wolf, and it took me to winter in Slough Creek. Immediately, something seemed strange.

This wolf wasn't any of my wolves, and the badge indicated its name was "d".

The mate heart was fully white and they didn't appear on the map.

After a few minutes, the game auto-saved not as "autosave-Buzza" as expected, but as- what I assume is- supposed to be the name of this wolf? At least Ćłòûd explains where the d came from.. even though I definitely don't think I ever bothered with the trouble of naming a wolf this.

I have the game running right now because out of curiosity I want to see what happens when the pups spawn. I don't really need help solving this issue, as of right now I don't think/know if it's affected anything else? But it's definitely a strange situation and I felt I should record it.

Update:

1 female and 3 ?s. Clicking "continue" with the blanks spawned male in all of them, so I guess we have a litter!

The HUD still reports a missing mate, which the map confirms. We're single parenting here, guys!

Pack Stats seem a little bugged out, considering there's no mate data, 3 pups are at 1?! lb, and it's narrow like the AM stats so the pup information pushes the other stats like predators thwarted off the screen. May d's severely undersized pups grow fast.

Several elk carcasses later, they are still small, but I am determined. I don't know how you got here, d, or where your mate is, or why your children are this way, but I will see it through. I wish their sister would stop stealing their food.

On the journey, we see elk marching along the river while we snack on one of their fallen comrades.

Hungry, but home :)

d, with their full title Ćłòûd, next to the wolves that are actually mine.

I wanted to load a saved file with her (I checked) to see if it'd actually spawn a mate this time, but the saved files are weird too. When I saved the game it auto filled as d, just like with any other wolf name. I added 1 to the end for my own records in case I wanted to make later save files. But, when selecting them... the "d" is replaced by the full name, fancy characters and all. (The mate did not spawn.)

Huh. That's probably one of the most interesting glitches I've ever seen.

Definitely the coolest thing I've ever had happen! I later discovered that I had correctly opened my recent "Buzza" save file. It turns out it was overwritten, I guess? With d?

It's almost like it synced someone else's saved wolf into my game file- a wolf from Amethyst Mountain, perhaps, without a mate?

I have an explanation for the absent characters in the name badge(well, kind of). This is pretty normal, actually. It happens with emojis as well as special characters, which I've discovered in the past. You can put an accented(?) character/emoji in a wolfs name from the wolf maker, though if you join a server or start up a single player game, it will exclude the emoji/unique character entirely from the badge and chat (I can't remember if they will display in your gamertag.) The letters are there, the game just won't let us see them when you're playing. (I'm not entirely positive if this is correct, btw.)

As for the mysterious appearance of the wolf, I don't know. It is a little strange.

I'm assuming the files have either become corrupted or the game's ability to sync information is out of whack. Are you using itch.io or Steam? I would try reinstalling the game again. Back up any original saves you have remaining first and move the copies them into another folder. When it asks to sync files, choose the option where it lets you push files to the server and see what happens.

All the other wolf files seem to be working normally. It's just this one saved game that's become Cloud, inexplicably, and added her to my roster of wolves. Reinstalling/making backups and wiping/syncing is acting normally now, like it always has, but Cloud's saved to the server now and seems to sync just like the rest of them?

That's good to hear that your other save files are okay. It seems like the Cloud save file came about via an issue with the server and/or glitch. Since everything seems to be okay now (and since your game has accepted the Cloud save file as one of its own), hopefully you will not have any additional issues, but please post about them if you do.
